Generative Engine Optimization: get cited, not just ranked.

A complete guide to the engineering discipline behind earning citations inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Claude, and Gemini.

Generative Engine Optimization is what SEO becomes when the SERP is no longer the destination. AI engines now intercept the query, synthesize an answer, and cite a handful of sources. GEO is the practice of being one of those sources — consistently, across engines, for the queries that matter.

    The four GEO levers

Entity consolidation. AI engines build an internal model of who you are. If your brand is fragmented across inconsistent names, missing schema, and weak Wikidata presence, you don't resolve as a single entity — and you don't get cited.

Citation-friendly structure. Direct answers in the first paragraph. Definitions in
tags, not buried inside
or
. Statistics with sources. Tables where they help. AI retrieval favors content that's easy to lift into an answer.

Schema that resolves ambiguity. Product, Organization, Article, FAQ, HowTo, and Person schemas tell the engine what each page is. Missing or conflicting schema is the most common reason a site doesn't get cited despite being authoritative.

Topical depth. AI engines prefer sites that demonstrably own a topic — not sites that publish one post about everything. The GEO content strategy is the opposite of programmatic SEO sprawl: fewer, deeper, more authoritative pages.

    Engine-by-engine

    ChatGPT (OpenAI)

Cites web sources via SearchGPT and the Bing index. Favors sites with consistent entity data, deep first-party content, and clean schema.

    Perplexity

Aggressive real-time citation engine. Surfaces 4–8 sources per answer. Loves recency, structured data, and pages that directly answer the prompt.

    Google AI Overviews

Pulls from the classic index but reweights for passage-level helpfulness. Brands with strong topical authority cluster the citations.

    Google AI Mode

Conversational layer on top of Search. Heavier reliance on entity graph and Knowledge Panel data. Schema and Wikipedia/Wikidata presence matter more.

    Claude (Anthropic)

Uses retrieval increasingly. Rewards plain, well-structured prose over keyword-stuffed copy.

    Gemini

Pulls from Google index plus YouTube. Video citations are a sleeper opportunity for brands with even modest video presence.

    Frequently asked

What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

GEO is the practice of structuring your website, content, and entity data so AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews cite you as a source in their answers. It overlaps with classic SEO by about 70% — the other 30% is citation engineering, entity consolidation, and schema work specific to AI retrieval.

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO optimizes for blue-link rankings. GEO optimizes for inclusion inside the AI-generated answer. Both share technical fundamentals (crawlability, schema, content quality), but GEO adds citation-friendly formatting, stronger entity signals, and content structured for passage retrieval.

    Can I measure GEO performance?

Yes. We track query-level citation share across ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews, and AI Mode. Brand mentions, source links, and answer position are all measurable. Try our free checkers to see your current footprint.

    Will GEO replace SEO?

No. Google still drives the majority of qualified ecommerce traffic, and AI engines cite the open web — which is still indexed by classic SEO infrastructure. Treat GEO as an additional layer that compounds with SEO, not a replacement.
